Why You Should Not Hit Your Kids

Managing children indeed becomes quite challenging at times, especially when they are cranky at their best. During such irritable times, parents lose control and it results in the child getting a smack. Many parents must have experienced this at least once while their kid is young.

However, as parents how do you view hitting a child – should you or should not you hit your kids?

Let’s analyze the reasons why kids get spanking from parents or why parents lose control and start hitting kids.

Parents hit children because:

  • of their misconduct
  • of bad behavior
  • if they don’t study or perform well in school, or
  • to avoid trouble caused by disobedient kids, among others

However, spanking or hitting the child is not a solution and it cannot help parents to change the behavior of a child or to discipline the child. On the other hand, it rather makes the child stubborn and rigid. So, when parents hit children for unruly behavior, the punishment makes the child think that their parents don’t love and care for them. Moreover, it also misbalances the attachment that parents should have with their children.

Here are some very important reasons why parents should never hit their children and what negative behavior could be there for hitting children may lead to.

  • It affects the parent-child bond

The first and the foremost thing that gets disturbed when you punish your kids is the bond that you share with the child. By punishing the kid you make your child feel neglected. Of course, it is pure human for the kids to think that the parents don’t love them because they hit them and thus the kid also deviates from parents.

  •  Children need affection

Of course, kids deserve love and not harsh punishments. It is possible to tame the most naughty or disobedient kid with care and affection. So, why punish them unnecessarily. Make love the language to teach kids and they will surely understand and obey you.

  • Punishment makes kids distracted

By punishing the child, you are making him/her distracted from learning, especially from learning important things like how to solve an issue without inflicting punishments or raising hands. Moreover, when a child is filled with rage against parents, he/she can’t learn about the better ways to deal with a problem at hand.

  • Children learn to hit

Yes, it is true. By hitting children you are simply teaching them to become hitters themselves. Children learn what they see and experience. Thus, by hitting them, you are showing them the way to hit.

In many cases, it is seen that the reason why parents hit or spank kids is not that the kids are unruly or an annoyance, rather it is the parents who cannot control their temper. So parents should know how to control their temper first rather than getting upset or showing rage towards their kids.

Also, parents should try to discipline kids in a healthy way without using corporal punishment. For this, you can try to control the child through nurturing various life skills within the child.

Numerous essential life skills can be nurtured among children. Some such life skills for kids are:

  • Skills on self -defense
